A conservative blog I happened upon a couple years ago most succinctly states what I feel about the passing of Jerry Fallwell.
The Moral Majority is NeitherThe only sadness involved here is that a man as influential as him chose to use his position to pervert everything good in Christianity and wield it as a scourge against the very people Jesus told his adherents to protect. The man was a disgrace. Good riddance.
With all of his power and influence, he could have almost single-handedly moved the Christian Right in a more positive direction, more centered on caring for the poor and protecting the weak. And yet, all he cared about was persecuting those who met with his moral disapproval. All in the name of Jesus.
If there is a Christian God, I wish I could be a fly on those pearly gates this afternoon. Somehow I think a deity who brought us the words of Christ would have many interesting and surprising things to say to this man. If there is a Christian hell, and there is a Jesus walking around the universe who spoke those words in the Bible, then this is going to be the worst day in Jerry Falwell’s entire existence. And he’ll deserve it.
